It seems natural, that an old card game, like Rummy, has many variations. The main factor that influences the differences between the types of the same game is the separation of regions.

At the first look types of Rummy may look similar, but the truth is, the differences are so important, that sometimes you have to play a type totally otherwise as another type. Rummy games have the same basic rules, the differences come in how you play or what you have to do.

A rummy game is influenced by luck, but the main thing to do in every type of rummy is to meld down as many points as you can. Melding is different in some games. In simple rummy the aim is to order the cards in your hands into sets. If you have high cards and you finish first, you probably win.  In other types, like contract rummy, players determine in the beginning a set everybody has to have when melding. In other words you can only meld, if you have the predetermined hand, or contract. The name comes from the fact that players make a contract on which hand has to be the meld. Manipulation rummy is also different, because you can change the meld you have on the table. This means you can expand an existing set, or take a card from a set to put it into another, with the aim of reaching a higher score. In knock rummy melding is the same as in basic rummy, the differences here are regarding the finish. A very specific type that is built around melding is the canasta group. Canasta rummy is based on gaining extra points for melds or sets of seven cards. These are called canastas, from here is the name derived. Canasta rummy is a subgroup of meld scoring rummy, where different melds are rewarded with positive scores.

We saw that melding can divide a game into many groups and types. There are other things that also differ. For example knock rummy is about getting out without having all cards melded. The player who wants to get out has to have the sum of the cards remaining in hands less than the other players have in their hands. If this turns out to be true, the player can get out and win, but if another player has a lower sum in hands, the player loses.

It is very important therefore, to know what kind of game we play, because melding is different in every one of the types. With a bit of thinking every type of rummy can be played well. If we want to win, however, we have to know the rules, we have to take in consideration the fact that in some cases being the first does not mean that we are the winners. If we play a type of rummy, where melds offer extra scores, we can win even with smaller cards, smaller melds.

For those, who think that rummy is easy, we have to say that rummy is simple until you play for fun. If you really want to win, you will have to learn a lot of things about types and strategies.
